How to play at 30

Frostbolt for steady damage; spend Ice Lance on a real Frozen window.

30 · Solo single target

One same-level enemy, room to retreat, Frost talent points as shown below.

  1. 1

    Prepare before pulling

Learn the available ranks: Frostbolt rank 5 at 26, Ice Lance rank 2 at 28, and Conjure Water rank 4 at 30. Refresh Ice Armor and keep a Mana Agate. Start with enough Mana for the pull plus Frost Nova and Blink; drink first if that reserve is missing.

    Abilities, conditions & paragraph sources

The sequence is our recommendation. Linked client records support the mechanics and gates; they do not prove a measured optimal rotation.

    Talents Forever · mage client exporttalents tree/name/rank and spell_desc class|spell|rank; local content/talents.json and content/spells.json, build 1.60.1.70291
  2. 2

Open at range, then read the gap

Open with Frostbolt from casting range, then cast it again while the target remains outside melee reach. If it closes before the next cast can finish, move first. The slow buys distance; it does not make standing in melee safe.

  3. 3

    Create one frozen window

When a rootable enemy reaches you, Frost Nova and step clear of melee. Cast Frostbolt while the root holds, then use Ice Lance only while Frozen still applies. Damage can break the root: if it breaks, return to Frostbolt or retreat instead of repeating normal Ice Lances.

  4. 4

Use the proc you actually own

With the 21st point in Fingers of Frost rank 1, a proc treats your next spell as Frozen. One charge is available, not two. An Ice Lance while moving is a practical way to use that charge; do not assume a following Ice Lance is empowered. Frostbolt may also consume it, so watch the buff before choosing.

  5. 5

    Finish and reset

Fire Blast can finish a low-health enemy while moving if its cost still leaves an escape reserve. Otherwise keep distance and finish with Frostbolt. Drink after combat; use Evocation only with a safe channel window. Mana Shield can drain the Mana you needed to escape.

30 · Dungeon damage & control

Tank has established threat; agree a kill target and a crowd-control mark.

  1. 1

    Make the pull predictable

Supply water and Arcane Intellect. If asked to Polymorph, choose a valid Beast, Humanoid or Critter and keep it outside area damage; damage breaks it and it heals rapidly. Wait for the tank to establish the kill target before beginning Frostbolt.

    Talents Forever · mage client exporttalents tree/name/rank and spell_desc class|spell|rank; local content/talents.json and content/spells.json, build 1.60.1.70291
  2. 2

Separate boss damage from root tricks

Keep Frostbolt as the repeatable single-target cast. A boss that cannot be rooted does not gain a Frost Nova window: Ice Lance becomes a proc or movement choice. If Fingers of Frost is not selected, there is no assumed proc window.

  3. 3

    Interrupt the assigned cast

At 24+ Counterspell can stop a dangerous school cast. Keep it for the agreed heal or high-damage cast, ensure range and line of sight, and call if unavailable. Its tooltip lists high threat: avoid using it as a casual pull button.

  4. 4

Protect the group when control fails

Use Remove Lesser Curse on the assigned curse. If you gain melee threat, move toward a clear tank pickup lane, use Frost Nova without trapping mobs beside the healer, then Blink clear. Ice Block, if talented, buys immunity while the tank recovers; it cannot heal you or guarantee threat removal.

    Talents Forever · mage client exporttalents tree/name/rank and spell_desc class|spell|rank; local content/talents.json and content/spells.json, build 1.60.1.70291
  5. 5

    Budget the next pull

Drink during the tank’s pause. Spend a Mana Agate early enough that it helps an extended fight; Evocation needs an undisturbed window. Stop damage to reapply a lost Polymorph when assigned: one controlled enemy can matter more than one extra Frostbolt.

30 · Two targets & area damage

A small controlled pack; no promise of safe mass pulling or instance boosting.

  1. 1

    Two enemies: remove one first

Polymorph a valid extra enemy and kill the other with Frostbolt. Avoid Cone of Cold, Frost Nova or Blizzard if they would hit the sheep. If neither can be controlled, split the pull or retreat before committing your Mana.

  2. 2

Area damage only after threat and space

In a dungeon, let the tank gather the pack and position Blizzard away from controlled targets and patrols. Improved Blizzard is optional, not part of the starter plan below; without it the spell itself does not add a slow.

    Talents Forever · mage client exporttalents tree/name/rank and spell_desc class|spell|rank; local content/talents.json and content/spells.json, build 1.60.1.70291
  3. 3

Break the channel to recover control

If enemies leave the tank or close on you, stop Blizzard, use a clear Frost Nova or Cone of Cold escape angle, and move. The current slow tuning is weaker than old Classic farming setups; do not rely on an endless chain of slows.

    Choose reset or proc utility

Cold Snap resets other Frost cooldowns but takes the same 21st-point slot budget as Fingers of Frost rank 1. At level 30 with Talented 0/5, choose one. A reset-focused route has no Fingers of Frost proc and must use real roots for empowered Ice Lance.

Stat priorities at 30

Upgrade priorities for level-30 play, not simulated stat weights. First keep enough health and resources for your role; compare upgrades of similar level. Hit and critical chance depend on the target and your allocated talents; no universal cap is assumed.

  1. Spell power
  2. Intellect
  3. Stamina
  4. Critical chance

Shatter needs a Frozen target; Fingers of Frost has its own proc and charge conditions. A boss you cannot freeze does not grant permanent Shatter value. For risky pulls, keep stamina instead of chasing marginal crit.

Read the mechanics behind this choice

These effects apply only with the named talent and its required ranks. The excerpt shows rank 1; your own build may differ.

Shatter ↗

Increases the critical strike chance of all your spells against Frozen targets by 17%.

Fingers of Frost ↗

Gives your Chill effects a 15% chance to grant you the Fingers of Frost effect, which treats your next 1 spell cast as if the target were Frozen. Lasts 15 sec.
